AS TELEVISION cameras whirred and a posse of policemen stood guard, DDA land Commissioner KJ Alphons led his band of Jana Shakti social workers on a cleanliness drive in Giri Nagar near Gobindpuri in South Delhi.
Apparently, unperturbed by the “brutal attack” on him and his wife last Saturday when he was carrying out a similar cleanliness drive in Mayur Vihar Phase-2 in Trans Yamuna area, Mr. Alphons and his team started removing garbage in Giri Nagar at about 10 am on Sunday.
The event this time passed off without any untoward incident unlike last time when a mob of MCD Safai Karamcharis led by the BJP legislator Gyan Chand had allegedly attacked them and Mrs. Sheela Alphons was critically injured.
Mr. Alphons said they have not yet moved the Supreme Court against the BJP legislator Mr. Gayan Chand and a few Safai Karamcharis of the MCD who had “attacked” him last time. “We have been assured that strict action will be taken against them. Therefore, we have decided to wait for seven more days before we do something on our own,” he said.
Regarding allegations of his having abused the safai Karamcharis, Mr. Alphons said that he has always behaved “in a civil manner” with everybody. “I am not even familiar with the words I have supposed to have uttered. You see, we are South Indians and are not very familiar with Hindi. I didn’t even know the meanings of the words,” he said.
